Nothing we have was given to us freely. Billionaires and CEOs aren't lining up to hand out raises to workers. Corporations aren't eagerly closing their offshore tax havens and investing that money back into our agencies. The large banks and financial institutions aren't willingly increasing their own taxes to pay for better roads and bridges for the rest of us.
To the contrary, we must fight for every little piece of the pie. We have had to fight legislatively and politically to win our pensions, our strong healthcare, the five-day workweek, the weekend, paid time off, safety and health regulations, and so much more.
Through collective action and mobilization -- oftentimes literal blood, sweat and tears -- unions have been able to build the American middle-class.
But today we are being attacked at every turn by corporations and their lobbyists who want nothing more than to cut our wages and downsize our agencies, all in order to save a few more tax dollars for billionaires.
Enough is enough. AFGE is ready to stand up and fight back.
A PAC, or a Political Action Committee, is a fund organized for the sole purpose of raising money to help elect or defeat political candidates. PACs make it easier for groups to pool their money to support champions who are running for public office.
Rest assured, the corporations who are trying to privatize us and downsize us all have a PAC. It would be foolish for AFGE not to fight back with a PAC of our own.
Union dues cannot be used for political contributions to candidates and campaigns, so we need to raise our own political funds to fight in the political arena.
That is AFGE-PAC. It is our PAC, made up of the small donations that each AFGE member is willing to give. Thousands of AFGE members currently contribute to the AFGE-PAC, and we need you by our side! Together, AFGE is able to use our collective funds to support our allies in public office and fight back against attacks from our opponents.
If someone stands with us, then we need to stand with them -- regardless of their political party or persuasion. We need to do everything in our power to support and defend the elected officials who take the tough votes to stand increase our pay, strengthen our agencies and stop anti-worker privatization efforts.
Every time there is a critical vote in Congress, AFGE jumps into the fray to ensure that our priorities are known and that they are met.
In recent years, AFGE-PAC has been a key factor in us winning:
Each one of these wins required strong pressure on Congress to ensure that federal workers got the goods. As our union's political power increases, so too do our gains.
